What’s the story?
Who am I?
My name is Quinn. I am a millennial from New York, son of a Brit and a Cuban. A person with endless curiosity and a reverence for the simple things in life. My job experience is as diverse and multitudinous as you can imagine. From operating carnival games to construction management to farming to cheffing. It’s a pretty common phenomenon for my generation. Although I’ve never doubted it or damned it. I constantly want to learn something new so I never settled. And the last of my jobs landed me in furniture.
Why Furniture?
Restoring antiques is one of those undertakings that constantly presents challenges and new skills to learn. How do you live the motto “never stop learning”? Go into furniture.
Building custom furniture is an open book with very few rules as long as you have an eye for details. It’s perfect. It’s varied, it’s challenging, and it’s full of growth opportunities.
How did you get into this? Necessity, being broke. stubbornness, a DIY attitude, and then patience. Lots of patience. After years of working for others, Restore Quinn is the continuation. With a focus on sustainability through repurposing and restoring furniture. My goal is to keep your furniture alive. Let it continue to accumulate stories, memories, the love of the people that use it everyday.
In an era of disposable design, planned obsolescence, and furniture that is meant to be replaced when the mood changes. I encourage a different attitude. Let it grow with you, make it to last, and never give up on on furniture with a story.
What makes your furniture special?
Everything has a story. That’s the essence of a piece of furniture. For me it’s only partially about the work, the material, the design and mostly about its story.
Who made it? Where’d it come from? Where has it been? What went down at this desk? Did someone put their hands here, pick up a pen, and write a letter that changed someones life? Sign a mortgage? Divorce Papers? How many drinks rested on that coffee table and stories were shared across it? Board games played and memories made.
When it comes to furniture, it is undoubtedly made to be used, made to be lived with, made to become a part of our story. So think of your furniture as special. Think of it as witness to all the happiness and tears and laughter and anger that you’ve lived through too. Without anthropomorphizing too much, a friend through thick and thin.
This is why you shouldn’t give up on furniture with a story. Take it to the spa. Change its outfit. Move it to a different room or pass it on to a cherished friend or family member. Give it some TLC. But please don’t throw it away.
